Another Olympic milestone for the team at 28 South!

The Redland Whitewater Centre has officially received a ‘Not a Controlled Action – Particular Manner’ determination from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water giving it the green light at the Commonwealth level. The Redland Whitewater Centre will play host to the Canoe Slalom events for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games!

In addition to the Redland Whitewater Centre, the decision also paves the way for the Birkdale Community Precinct, which will deliver recreational community infrastructure for the residents of Redland City Council and beyond. The Birkdale Community Precinct and Redland Whitewater Centre will contribute to longstanding legacy, serving as a future training facility after the Games.

28 South Environmental is proud to have led and submitted the EPBC Act referral for the precinct, alongside Redland City Council and the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority. The referral package was a collaborative effort with contributions from experienced consultants and experts in their respective fields – Mary Timms of Raptor Environmental, Trevor Johnson of SLR Consulting, Bill Ellis, and the design team at AECOM.

Securing this decision required a thorough assessment of potential Matters of National Environmental Significance, combined with tangible Nature Positive value adds and a clear referral approach to de-risk the Commonwealth approvals pathway.

We’re proud to have supported Redland City Council through this complex environmental approval process and to have the opportunity to contribute to legacy infrastructure for Brisbane and Queensland.

A big shout out to our team who delivered this career-defining project – Christopher Huff, Tahlia Piccirillo, Gordon Morris, Mitchell Oxley, Mitch Taylor Andrew Dickinson the broader supporting team 28 South Environmental Pty Ltd South.
